codes and conventions of a thriller film

codes and conventions of a thriller film cant be split into three parts sound, editing and mise-en-scene .
  • editing : quick cuts, camera angle changes
  •  lighting, especially the use of shadow. mirrors and stairs are also conventions of thriller movies. Noir - very dark ,Chiaroscuro - light against dark - creates a sense of illusion, nightmare whilst also being aesthetically pleasing.
  • Claustrophobic setting is a thriller convention , for example : planes ,coffins ,under water ,boot of a car ,elevator/lift ,walk in freezer ,tube trains ,white van ,small room ,car ,prison cell ,narrow alleyways ,multi-storey car parks are all popular chocies .
  • plots of thrillers usally include :Suprises & Twists ,Plays With Viewers Mind ,Quick Cuts & Change Of Camera Angles ,Music To Add Tension ,Use Of Lighting To Create Shaddows ,Mirrors ,Stairs ,From Killers Point Of View,Flash Backs ,Pass Of Time Sequences,Make Audience Think

art title of the title

·         The film starts with first seconds of , Bernstein’s musical notes softly start to play. A child, hums very child-like in the background. In the middle of the box, Gregory Peck is written. A pocket watch ticks quietly.

·         The child lifts a crayon and unintentionally sets a  marble rolling . this is a metaphor that the child is going to be a catalyst for change in the story. the marble is a code for her childhood innocence.

To Kill A Mockingbird contact sheet

·         The best element to Stephen Frankfurt’s opening title sequence for “To Kill A Mockingbird” is the window reflected in the marbles.

·         A wave, as drawn by Scout, is cross matched with the beaded chain over the silent timepiece. The child draws what can be discerned as dividing lines which is a code for the racial divisons in the film . And in the tearing of the mockingbird, a chasm that repersents the divisions between blacks and white.

film opening analysis

as a preparation for my film opening I watched some fine examples of film opeings .

  •  first I watched the opening scene to goodfellas. which is the perfect example of a gangster thriller and action film .
  •  the opeing ceditswith the casts name coming across the scene with the car sound acoming them. then we see a car from behind .
  •   the film starts with three seemingly normal people (joe pesci , robert di nero and ray liotta) in the car , then a soft quite banging nosie in the boot of the car. the three men open the car to see a violently dieing man in the boot. then two of the men stabb/shot the man .
  • then the vocie over from ray liotta saying "I always wanted to be a gangster. this film perfectly dumps the audence direcly into the world of a new york gangster and starts halfway though making it hard to stop watching the film this is also helped with the egnigma code of the dieing man in the boot.

  •  the second film opeing I watched was there will be blood , this is one of best films of the last 5 years.
  • the film opening is without diolouge but still drags the audence into the film with wide shot and atmospheric music .
  • this is a great example of how small amounts of action can still be made interesting and compelling.

the third film than I analysis was A clockwork orange by stanley kubrick .
  •  the opening is one of the best thriller opeings of all time
  • it introduces us to the main character and without saying so it reveals everything about him
  • the extreme close up of the alex character fading into close up is haunting and clever
  • the music makes the effect of disturbing threat so much more , with the mordern syth like music it also adds to the modernist dystopian setting.
  • when given the image of the four "drogs" in the milk bar the serreal element of the story is introduced we fall seemlessly into the world of the film.
this is my first film production company logo , it is a start which I may work on .
this is the new improved  logo for a film production company.
